Medivac

Medivac is the common term for medical evacuation although there are others who use medevac. There was a time when medivac was exclusively associated to the mode of transportation used in the evacuation process. However, it should not only pertain to the vehicle used. More importantly, it should entail the opportune and well-organized medical care given to people who are being evacuated from accidents or battlefields through the use of ground or air ambulances.

Medivac has been around since 1928 when the Australian Royal Flying Doctor Service was founded. Back then, the purpose of medivac is to take medical personnel to remote places in order to provide medical care. Now, medivac is more than that. Simply put, medivac is speedy medical care without compromising quality.

Numerous institutions offer medivac. There may be differences in the charges but the medical staff, medical equipment, and available medications are, more or less, the alike. The medical staff consists of cardiologists, neurologists, orthopedics, flight respiratory therapists, emergency medicine flight physicians, registered flight nurses, and critical care flight paramedics.

When it comes to on-air medivac, here are few of the medical equipments required: FAA approved stretcher, cardiac monitors, portable transport ventilators and suction units, intubation kits, emergency cardiac drugs, blood pressure cuffs, oxygen regulators, gauges, canulas, and masks, linens, blankets, towels, and pillows.

Medivac-oriented companies make sure that they only have the best—the best equipment, staff, aircraft, everything. After all, we are talking about saving lives here.
